Easy Configuration Dialogs

Setting up bands and charge tables is made easy with configuration dialogs (see images). If pricing by order value, you can set the shipping prices using gross or net figures. The module is supplied with a full set of default data to support UK stores and is designed for flexibility to implement support for other countries readily - if you have postcode and band data for your country, I will set up a load file for you.

Supports Single or Multiple Services

This feature is typically used to offer a choice between slow and cheap or quick and expensive services. The services will use the same band definitions but have their own pricing tables which means you can set not only their price but also availability in each band - e.g. economy shipping to all bands but next day only to band one.

Supports Charging by Postcode and Order Weight or Order Value

This module is suitable for countries where couriers charge different price tables based on the delivery location and allows you to set up a rates table for the delivery areas you want to supply. There are two basic strategies for shipping pricing:

  • by order value - this typically charges delivery on smaller orders and offers free delivery over a certain order value. This is easy for customers to understand and can be used to drive bigger orders. Essentially you set your product prices to include a slightly bigger margin overall to cover the overall shipping costs and charge something to ship smaller orders so they contribute a bit more.
  • by order weight - basically the bigger the order, the higher the shipping charge. You set up the charge tables more or less to cover the cost of shipping that order. This needs all your product and packaging weights set up and the box split calculations checking. It is less transparent up front for your customers and may lead to more abandoned carts but it means your product prices look cheaper so can drive more traffic to the site.

Free Shipping Over Order Value and Upsell Messaging

Whether charging by weight or order value, you can set a Free Over ££ for each band and service (in contrast to the old module where you had to use order value). With the new setting, you can optionally add messaging to the shipping quotes -spend another £n to get free shipping.

Supports Overriding Core Box Split Calculation

If you are using other shipping modules that rely on the core setting for the maximum weight of a parcel, you can set this module to perform its own calculation using a different setting if required.

Supports a Default Charge Band

If the majority of the population falls in one of your charge bands then it's appropriate to configure that band as the default if the customer's postcode isn't matched in the database. Postcode data does change over time so the database could be out of date and this allows you to capture the order with a warning that the shipping quote may be incorrect. The alternative is to throw an error and hope that the customer contacts you to sort out the issue (spoiler alert - they won't).

Development Roadmap

Two additional features are intended:

  • export your settings to a load file like the one distributed. This lets you load settings from a test site into the live site, or to take a backup before setting up new rates
  • admin page for maintaining the postcode / area database
